Re-valuing Pollinators through Arts and Science collaboration
Collaboration 4 – Glass Bees
Artist – Dr Tyra Oseng Rees
Scientists – Sinead Lynch from Bumblebee Conservation Trust; Prof Mike Christie from Aberystwyth University; Dr Peter Graystock from Department of Entomology University of California and Professor Simon Potts and the team at Reading University
Under the discussion group Preservation of Wild Bees one of the topics was the twenty-four remaining of the different species of bumblebees that live in UK (two species have become extinct in the last 20 years, with one of those being re-introduced). During discussions among the scientists, conservationists and artists it became apparent that Oseng-Rees wanted to explore, with a positive approach, the fragility of these creatures and also demonstrate to members of the public of how rapidly a species can become extinct. She is making 24 different bumblebees in recycled glass that will be distinguished by their banding and facial shape, to hang in an installation.
